MSVP HOST Update

Folks ... sorry for the delay (again) in getting out an update ... just got out of the Hospital ... I now have some severe health issues to deal with (complete Kidney failure ... need a Kidney transplant) plus another operation ... large needles inserted into my spine ...however I will try to better maintain the MVPS HOSTS file. Well just got back from Hospital again (excessive water in lungs)

Health Update ... things go from bad to worse ... slipped and fell in my kitchen and broke my leg (ankle) plates and screws to fix. Several weeks later ... with a walking boot on, I again slipped and fell. While I tried to break my fall ... instead I broke both arms. Imagine that!! A cast on my leg and a cast on both arms ... so as much as I hate to I think it's time to retire from maintaining my Hosts file ...

If you could ... please consider a donation. Thanks to all that contributed ... every little bit helps.

  1. What bad news !
I wish you overcoming your problems.

On the other hand, if your excellent hosts file is no more updated, do you know (and could you suggest) another hosts file distrib ?
The only ones I know a so big that they cause more problem than they resolve, contrary to your file.

  2. I agree. Can you recommend a host file that is just as good as yours, if not better? Your host file was the best one. Sorry about your health issues. Fast and speedy recovery.

  5. Hello, Mike,

I wish you the best of the best, for your health and everything else, and may it last a very long time.

My own public hosts list existed since January 20, 2004 and is not anymore maintained for years..

  7. I found your Hosts file around 2002 and developed a program HostsCK to work with it. A whole online community was created and still exists because of your file and hard work. I speak for all of the remaining 532 rediSoft community members when i say thank you Mike. Get well soon, enjoy your retirement and stay safe.

  8. Internet legend, you made people's lives easier, therefore the world greater. Thank you and happy retirement. Still using your file to block garbage. I salute you.

  9. Long time user of your hosts file, i'm glad to know you are still alive (your previous updates painted quite a grim picture about your health and i assumed the worst) Wish you a speedy recovery in dealing with all this misfortune and a happy life going forward.

For anyone else interested in a replacement, I'd recommend StevenBlack's hosts file which is basically everything you could ever want and more. Plus it's maintained by the community and very frequently so.

  10. Vlad, How did you add StevenBlack to the list? When I try to add his raw file to HostsMan, I get an error message.

    1. use the non-github mirrors they're hosted on http instead of https and even works with the older versions of hostman for 98/2k/xp. btw if you want to find that version, just put hostsman's site into the waybackmachine and goto like 2010.

  11. Quite simply the best hosts file. So many hosts files now are bloated with 100,000 plus entries slowing down your browsing, especially if you have to leave the DNS service enabled because of your VPN. MVPS Hosts had it just right.
    Enjoy your retirement.

  12. Been using your hosts file for years. It's been such a huge help and a wonderful contribution to us all. I'm extremely saddened to hear about your health issues. I hope your health improves or that you are the very minimum not in much pain. Thank you again and know you will be in my prayers.

  13. Sorry about your bad luck. I've enjoyed your work for years on my different PCs. Hope my $50 bucks helps a little. A small showing of my appreciation for your hard work. I think I gave before, but it's been too long for your contribution. Get well soon.

  15. Thank you very much! I heard how long you have been working for the community. My respect for that! I used your hosts file for a few years and was very happy with it. Excellent work. I read that you are ill and all I can do from here is to send you best wishes and wish you good health soon - and donate something I can afford. Are monetary donations still welcome, then? After all, your post was more than 6 months ago....

    Best wishes, Robin

    2. checking in how you're feeling. Wish we could block all of the issues you're going through with a hosts file too, but unfortunately life isn't as simple. Just wanted to thank you for all of your hard work. I put together an incomplete list of software that can help manage the hosts file and speed up dns inquiries. I'm really trying to find a way to block spyware in different software instead of just blocking the software. For example, this guy managed to grab all the spyware domains from edge and added it to the hosts file (https://www.reddit.com/r/browsers/comments/rvup37/unmicrosofted_edge_block_tracking_in_microsoft/),
I'd like to do that with all browsers if possible. I can be reached by discord: ibay770#0000 or on my site.

  20. Good day sir, I hope this finds you in better health. I contribute to your donation yearly; this is a simplistically awesome appliction and use it on every computer I own and recommend it to everyone in the securtiy circles I run in.
Do you have or have you thought of creating a repository on GitHub for your application? This would be a great way to have others help with the upkeep an maintenance of this awesome application that you developed. I for one would be very happy to help. Again I hope this finds you in better health and good spirits!

  23. Hello Mike. I'm not sure if you read these still, or if you're even still alive after all the health issues, but I still needed to write this.

Ever since I was much younger, I've been interested in security. I came across your hosts file when I was in my late teens. I am now in my early 30s. That is how long you've been apart of my life.

Thank you for doing all the work you've done over the decades to help random strangers on the internet keep safe and secure.

Know that there are hundreds or thousands, that still think about you from time to time and while I'm certain you have far more going on in your life than to worry about this, know that we still care about you and wish you all the best.

    Thanks for all you've done.

    1. I totally agree with everything you’ve said. He is the “OG” of internet security. I’ve been using his hosts file since around 2005 on my old dinosaur computer called XP. I posted my original comment on here wishing him good health back in Sept 2022.

Hope you are well, sir. Thank you for all the hard work you’ve put into creating, updating and maintaining the hosts file.

  24. Hi I have been using Mike's excellent Hosts file sine old windows xp days and I now use Ubuntu Linux. I have tried to use Steven Black's hosts file but it stops any online orders with my credit card bank so I have to go back to the last known Mike's file.
    I hope he is alright and thanks for all the excellent work on the previous Hosts files;
    Dave....
